We don’t know if it’s the extra long body, the extra short legs, or the extra big heart. But whatever it is, Corgi Mix breed dogs are guaranteed to melt your heart and have you saying “Awwwww” over and over again!

What Is A Corgi Mix?
The quick answer is a Corgi Mix is the result of breeding a Corgi with any other breed of dog. Just like with Poodle Mixes, these breeds are also mixed for a variety of reasons. Regardless of the reason, they almost all have miniature traits that make the Corgi itself so cute and loveable.
Before we go into the many, many, MANY different types of Corgi Mixes, it’s good to know a little about the Corgi. Many if the dominant traits you will find in a Corgi Mix are prevalent in the purebred Corgi.
What Is A Corgi?
A Welsh Corgi, abbreviated as Corgi, is a stocky legged, long bodied dog. It’s body type is similar to that of a Dachshund but much larger. Let’s go into a little more detail of Corgi traits.
The Corgi is split between two breeds; the Pembroke Welsh and Cardigan Welsh. Most of these traits are universal between the two. The only truly noticeable differences is in their physical appearance.
Corgi Traits
These traits are some of the most likely characteristics to pass along to your Corgi Mix.
Appearance
Corgis are known for their short, stubby legs, long, thick bodies, large, triangular shaped ears, and bright, expressive faces. According to the AKC standards of perfection, the Pembroke and Cardigan both have varying coat types and colors:
Cardigan Welsh | Pembroke Welsh
Coat | Dense, medium length; top coat “harsh in texture”; lies smooth, weather-resistant; “insulating undercoat is short, soft and thick” | “medium length; short, thick, weather resistant undercoat” |
Color (*standard) | *Black & White, *Blue Merle & White, *Brindle & White, *Red & White, *Sable & White Brindle Merle & White Gray & White Liver & White Red Merle & White Sable Merle & White White Merle | *Black & Tan, *Fawn, *Red, *Sable |
Markings (*standard) | *Black Mask *Black Mask & Ticked *Brindle Points *Brindle Points & Ticked *Tan Points *Tan Points & Ticked *Ticked | *White |
Size
Size is the biggest (no pun intended) distinguishing feature between Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis. As you can see on the chart below, Cardigan Welsh Corgis are a good bit taller and heavier than their Pembroke Welsh counterparts.
Cardigan Male | Cardigan Female | Pembroke Male | Pembroke Female
Height | 11-13 inches | 11-13 inches | 9.8-11.8 inches | 9.8-11.8 inches |
Weight | 31-37 lbs | 31-37 lbs | 31 lbs or less | 24 lbs or less |
Temperament and Personality
Corgi Mixes make wonderful companions and prove it often with their high level of affection. They are fiercely loyal to their human.
This is not a particularly yappy breed. Corgis are highly alert and make good watchdogs but, with proper training, will not go much beyond a responsible alert bark.
Intelligence, Training, and Exercise
Corgis are incredibly intelligent. Combine that with how agreeable and eager to please they can be, that makes them super easy to train. They have an outgoing personality and are very responsive to new tricks and commands.
Corgis love to be active and require a moderate amount of exercise. A slow to medium paced walk (with a good harness, of course) should be enough. Another great exercise and training opportunity is to try them out on agility courses. Corgis adapt very well to the obstacles and puzzles.
Grooming and Care
Corgis do not take a lot of grooming and maintenance. A good brushing once a week and a bath every 3 or 4 months is really all they need.
They are pretty heavy shedders, however. That is, of course, a double edged sword. Heavy shedding means little to no knots or matting. But it also means you have hair everywhere and they are NOT hypoallergenic.
One of the few exceptions is the Corgipoo. They do still tend to shed, but it is not quite as much as other Corgi Mixes and are, thus, a little more allergy friendly.
You will also want to make sure your Corgi, puppies and adults, have a high quality food.

History Of The Corgi
Corgis have historically been raised and bred to be herding, or heeler, dogs. They are native to Wales in the United Kingdom. Corgis were introduced to the United States in 1933 by Lewis Roesler of Merriedip Kennels in Massachusetts.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi Vs Cardigan Welsh Corgi
Modern day Corgis are split between two distinct breeds; the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and The Cardigan Welsh Corgi. They are very similar in their personalities, intelligence, and energy levels.
They differ mostly in appearance. Cardigans are generally larger and found in a much wider variety of colors and markings.
Pembrokes are smaller in size with only a handful of colorings. They are also only marked with white. Pembrokes have also enjoyed more popularity due to their close association with royalty.

How To Find A Corgi Mix
If you’re ready to take the plunge, you will be glad to know there are a ton of different breed options for you to choose from!
Now, you’re probably wondering how to find a Corgi Mix. We recommend either finding a reputable breeder or going the adoption route.
Find A Reputable Breeder
One of the biggest benefits of buying through a breeder is you get a complete history of your puppy. That means you know the parents, you know any birthing issues that may have occurred, as well as any medical issues that may run in their blood line.
When we mention the breeder option, we are talking about a reputable breeder. A reputable breeder is one that places the health and well-being of their animals over profit.
Unfortunately, especially with designer breeds, there are many backyard breeders and puppy mills that only focus on churning out as many puppies as they can to make as much money as they can. These unethical practices can breed in many health issues and illnesses that carry on for many generations.
Many pet stores get their stock from puppy mills masquerading as home breeders. Since it is so hard to verify if a pet store supplier is an ethical breeder we strongly recommend against going to a pet store.
Once you find a breeder that has the particular Corgi Mix you are looking for you will want to verify they are a reputable breeder. You can do this by asking A LOT of the right kind of questions.
Don’t worry about annoying them. They will be happy that their puppy is going to go to a good and caring home.
Some of the questions that you can ask are:
- What is the area like where they keep their dogs?
- How many puppies and litters do they have a year?
- How many dogs do they breed at a time?
- Are they pets or just kept breeding?
- Do they have a separate kennel or do they live in the breeder’s home?
Find A Rescue Or Pet Adoption Agency
Adopting your puppy is one of the kindest things you can do. Unfortunately, there are far too many people who buy a cute little puppy that don’t understand how much work goes into them. Once they realize it, they drop their dog off at a shelter.
Many dog breeds become very attached to their humans. This sudden abandonment can lead to trauma in these poor puppies. Giving them a good and loving home is a wonderful act.
There may be some behavioral issues at first but with time, patience, and training, you can help them work through those problems. You both will enjoy a tighter bond because of it.
Finding a shelter or rescue depends on your specific area. Fortunately, there are many rescues out there that cater to specific breeds and hybrid breeds of dogs. You can do a quick web search for “corgi rescues near me” or a similar search. You should have no problem finding your new pup.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Corgi mix dog?
A Corgi Mix dog is a Corgi crossed with another breed of dog.
Are corgi mixes healthy?
As a general rule, yes, they are healthy. If you get your Corgi Mix from a reputable breeder you should not need to worry about health problems. Once you have them, keep them on a healthy diet with plenty of exercise and they should live a long and healthy life.
Do corgi mixes shed?
Corgis are pretty heavy shedders, going through two major sheds a year. The amount a COrgi Mix sheds is dependant on the breed crossed with the Corgi. If you keep them brushed out once a week or so, you should not have an excess of dog hair everywhere.
What is the lifespan of a Corgi mix?
Generally speaking, a healthy Corgi will live around 12 years or so. A Corgi Mix should live about the same amount of time.
Why do corgi mixes always look like corgis?
A large portion of corgi mixes will look like corgis because they’ll have those short legs just like corgis do. Short legs are a definitive trait for corgis and are caused by a dominant gene that causes dwarfism.
Dominant genes are genes that only one copy is needed in order for the trait to be observable. And almost all corgis have two copies of this gene which means they have to pass one to their offspring.
How big will a corgi lab mix get?
Because of the size difference between a Corgi and a Lab, the size of their mix can also vary quite a bit. Their weight on the low wend is around 30 lbs, which is about the maximum weight of a Corgi. A Lab can get up to 60 lbs or more.
Depending on the size of the parents, a Corgi Lab mix can weigh anywhere between those two; 30 to 60 lbs.
